Baking Recipes - Herb Bread Recipe

Ingredients

Makes 1 large loves

  • 375 g/12 oz strong plain flour

  • 2 teaspoons dried tarragon

  • 2 teaspoons caster sugar

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 2 teaspoons fast-action dried yeast

  • 250 ml/8 fl oz milk

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 1 tablespoon fennel seeds


Method:

  1. Grease a 23 x 12 cm/9 x 5 inch loaf tin. Stir the flour, tarragon, sugar, salt and yeast in a bowl.

  2. Mix together the milk and egg and work into the dry mixture. Knead well for 10 minutes.

  3. Shape the dough to fit the loaf tin and roll it in the fennel seeds to coat before turning into the tin.

  4. Cover with an oiled plastic bag and leave in a warm place to prove for 30 minutes.

  5. Bake in a preheated oven, 200°C (400°F), Gas Mark 6, for 25-30 minutes. Transfer the loaf to a wire rack to cool before serving.
