Ingredients

Serves 4-5

  • 250 gI8 oz blackberries

  • 2 cooking apples, peeled, cored and sliced

  • 2 teaspoons corn flour

  • 125-150 g/4-5 oz sugar

  • 125 g/4 oz plain flour

  • 50 g/2 oz butter, diced

  • 50 g/2 oz demerara sugar

  • 25 g/1 oz bran flakes, coarsely crushed

  • 50 g/2 oz chopped mixed nuts


Method:

  1. Place the blackberries and apple slices in a bowl. Mix together the corn flour and sugar and sprinkle over the fruit.

  2. Toss well until thoroughly coated. Turn the mixture into a 1.2 liter/2 pint pie dish.

  3. Sift the flour into a mixing bowl, add the butter and rub in with the fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

  4. Stir in the demerara sugar, bran flakes and chopped nuts. Spoon the mixture over the fruit and flatten slightly with the back of a spoon.

  5. Cook in a preheated oven, 190°C (375°F), Gas Mark 5, for 40-45 minutes until the fruit is tender and the topping light golden. Serve hot or cold.
