Ingredients

Serves 4

  • 4 cooking apples, cored

  • 50 g/2 oz sultanas

  • 50 g/2 oz light soft brown sugar

  • 25 g/1 oz butter, cut into 4 pieces

  • 6 tablespoons orange juice

  • 125 g/4 oz golden syrup


Method:

  1. Using a sharp knife, make a circular cut around the waist of each apple, to prevent the skin from bursting.

  2. Arrange the apples in a buttered shallow ovenproof dish. Mix the sultanas and sugar in a bowl; spoon into the cavities in the apples. Top each with a piece of butter.

  3. Heat the orange juice and golden syrup in a small saucepan until the syrup has melted, then spoon over the apples in the dish.

  4. Cook in a preheated oven, 190°C (375°F) Gas Mark 5, basting with the orange mixture occasionally, for 50 minutes or until the apples are tender.

  5. Serve hot with custard, cream or ice cream.
