Best-ever American
Burgers Recipe
Ingredients
-
15ml/1 tbsp vegetable oil
-
1 small onion, chopped
-
450g/1 lb minced beef
-
1 large garlic clove, crushed
-
5ml/1 tsp ground cumin
-
10ml/2 tsp ground coriander
-
30ml/2 tbsp tomato puree or ketchup
-
5ml/1 tsp wholegrain mustard
-
dash of Worcestershire sauce
-
30ml/2 tbsp mixed chopped fresh herbs such as
parsley, thyme and oregano or marjoram
-
15ml/1 tbsp lightly beaten egg
-
salt and ground black pepper
-
flour, for shaping
-
oil, for frying (optional)
-
mixed salad, chips and relish, to serve
Serves 4 burgers
Method:
-
Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the onion and cook
for 5 minutes, until softened. Remove from the pan,
drain on kitchen paper and leave to cool.
-
Mix together the beef, garlic, spices, tomato puree
or ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, herbs,
beaten egg and seasoning in a bowl. Stir in the
cooled onions.
-
Sprinkle a board with flour and shape the mixture
into four burgers with floured hands and a palette
knife. Cover and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.
-
Heat a little oil in a pan and fry the burgers over
a moderate heat for about 5 minutes each side,
depending on how rare you like them.
-
Alternatively,
cook under a moderate grill for the same time. Serve
with salad, chips and relish.
Notes:
If you prefer, make eight smaller burgers
to serve in buns, with melted cheese and tomato slices.
